Geneva, May 23, 2019 – Today, thousands of Alcon associates across more than 35 countries are participating in Alcon in Action, a company-wide day of community volunteering. This is the seventh consecutive year that Alcon, the global leader in eye care dedicated to helping people see brilliantly, has engaged in a global day of volunteering – and the first time as a standalone company.
Demonstrating Alcon’s longstanding commitment to service, associates are impacting local communities and individuals in locations including Australia, China, France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the United States. The company anticipates thousands of volunteer hours to be accumulated around the world.
“Alcon in Action is more than a one-day event, it’s a celebration of Alcon’s longstanding commitment to building stronger, healthier communities, and an opportunity to demonstrate who we are as a corporate citizen,” said David Endicott, Chief Executive Officer of Alcon. “Alcon in Action brings our associates together for a common cause and inspires us to take action in our communities today and every day.”
In Fort Worth, Alcon volunteer activities include serving meals to the homeless, playing games and eating with the elderly, reading books to children and mentoring inmates through a prison entrepreneurship program. In addition to remote volunteering, many Alcon campuses have on-site activities for associates to participate in, as well. Alcon in Action’s global reach includes associates in Japan recycling contact lenses and blister packs, and associates in Thailand assisting in marine waste collection and clean up.
“Making a difference where Alcon associates live and work is fundamental to us,” said Melissa Thompson, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Alcon and President of the Alcon Foundation. “We feel an immense sense of pride in working for a company that values and supports volunteerism. While we are active in communities year-round, Alcon in Action provides associates with a unique opportunity to come together locally and connect with our neighbors. We are excited to continue making a positive and tangible impact through our global day of volunteering.
While Alcon in Action is a one-day event, Alcon works year-round alongside local non-profit organizations in communities worldwide. From literacy tutoring and meal delivery to vision screenings, Alcon associates contribute to their communities on an ongoing basis. Helping people see brilliantly is the core of Alcon’s mission, and by volunteering and supporting long-time charitable partners, lives are changed in more ways than one.
